GEORGE FOWLER & SARAH TUBBY

George Fowler was the son of John FOWLER (born 8th April 1801 in Tottenham, Mdx.) and Ann BANASTER (from Kegworth, Leicestershire) who were married at All Hallows, Tottenham, Middlesex on the 21st November 1819. According to the 1841 census (for which John Fowler was an enumerator) for Scotland Green, Middlesex, John was Parish Beadle and it has since transpired that he was the last Parish Beadle for Tottenham. Five children were found on this census as follows: Septimus, born around 1821, a journeyman tailor; George, born 17th Jan 1822, also a journeyman tailor; Sarah, born 1st Jan 1827; Emma, born 20th Jul 1828 and Ellen, born 25th May 1833. Three other children have since been found: Christopher born 16th May 1830; Mary born 29th Sep 1834 and Elizabeth born 16th Jun 1835.

On the 17th August 1842 George enlisted as a Private in the 99th Regiment of Foot and on the 21st April 1843 sailed on the convict ship NORTH BRITON (see below) to Australia, along with over twenty other men from his regiment. On the 16th November 1850 in Hobart Town, Tasmania he obtained his discharge for £15.0s.0d. Sarah TUBBY sailed for Australia sometime after the 1841 census (which found her at home in Scotland Green, Tottenham with her family) and before 1st April 1844 - her first marriage to William CASE in Sydney, NSW.

On the 30th October 1847 George FOWLER married Sarah TUBBY, (or CASE as she was then) at St Andrews Scots Church, Sydney, NSW. Thomas Hume Allison & Jane E. Allison were witnesses.

George & Sarah had nine children:

  1. Emma Sarah b. 1848 Sydney, NSW and baptised in Hobart, married George Erasmus FARR in 1877.

  9. George William b. 1864 Hobart, married Annie Benigna SUMNER in 1884 Hobart

However, it appears that Sarah and her previous husband, William CASE, produced three children:

  1. William S. born 1845 Sydney, NSW and died 1846
  2. Sarah I. born 1846 Sydney, NSW
  3. Mary Elizabeth. born 1846 Sydney, NSW (Sarah & Mary were twins), married John HALL in 1873 Hobart

99th Regiment of Foot

GENERAL

The 99th was founded in Glasgow in 1824 and became the 99th Lanarkshire Regiment in 1832. The regiment moved to Australasia in 1842, firstly stationed in Hobart in 1843 moving to George Street Barracks, Sydney, NSW in 1844. Detachments were sent to Norfolk Island and New Zealand. In 1845 they were part of the force sent to New Zealand to put down the Maori rebellion. A detachment took part in the assault on Ohaeawai Pah on 1 July 1845 and on Ruapekapeka on 10th January 1846. Commanding Officer: Lieutenant Colonel H Despard. The campaign lasted for more than two years before the regiment returned to Hobart, Tasmania until 1854 when a contingent was posted to Victoria. In the late 1850's the regiment was stationed at Aldershot where it gained a high reputation for smartness in drill and dress. In 1881 the 99th united with the Wiltshire Regiment to become the 99th Duke of Edinburgh's Regiment.

At the Anglesea Barracks in Hobart there is a memorial corner in which the centrepiece is a magnificent free standing sandstone column - a British memorial to members of the 99th Regiment who, while in Tasmania in 1850, erected it to acknowledge members of the Regiment who were killed in New Zealand in 1845-7.
